WATERFALLS-MORNING DAY 1

After we left the ship for the final time, we were picked up  by bus, with about 18 others, to begin our expensive 3 day tour.  We were driven to Deilartunguhver, to admire Europe's most powerful thermal spring. And you could see it from a great distance.

The spring's flow is strong enough to supply hot water to towns within a 40-mile radius.

Upon arriving at the site, this first thing to greet us was the Icelandic dog, for lack of a better name.

The huge piper to carry the steam and water came from the spring,

Which one could see bubbling here,

And on to the power plant to be sent on for public use.  You can see the lush green grass, none of that in Greenland!

The farmers were busy mowing the hay and packing it into bags for the animals to eat next winter.

The red roofed farm building and houses nestled into the base of the surrounding mountains.

Occasional rivers crossed the green land, carrying run off from the the mountains & glaciers.

We saw the Langjokull Glacier behind the mountains, where we would be later in the day.

Hvita is a glacier river in Arnessysla in South Iceland, that has its source near the
Langjokull Glacier.   It is a popular destination for rafting, good salmon fishing and the home of some of Icelands most famous waterfalls.

The water tumbles down a deep canyon of Volcanic origin.

The Barnafoss Waterfall is named for two children from a nearby farm of the same name (now abandoned) who were lost on a Christmas day years ago when the rest of the family had gone to Mass.  When they returned the children were gone and assume fallen into the river and drowned.

The next falls, named Hraufossar is only a short distance and is formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 300 ft out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under Langjokull glacier. The waterfall is recognizable by its turquoise blue waters, lending the surrounding environment distinctive color.
We entered Husafell, a natural wonderland characterized by dense woods, lava formations, ancient glaciers and clear mountain springs.  And a wonderful buffet lunch at the Hotel Husafell.
